Rich Hill News from the Mayor
Yellow ribbons support our troops
The spirit of caring and giving is alive and well in Round Lake Beach. We see an enormous number of Yellow Ribbons through-out our community calling for the safe return of our POWs. As I write this, seven of our POWs have been found alive and well. Several residents collected donations of personal items to send to our troops overseas. This is very inspiring, especially when many of those involved area school children. They are wise beyond their years.

Our police and firemen once again took part in the Kauffman Cup basketball fundraiser. In a run-away game, our police were beaten by our firemen in a fun-filled game. The funds raised go toward the annual "Take a Kid Fishing Derby" on June 7th from 8:00 am to noon at the Lakefront Park in Round Lake Beach. Thanks to all those who volunteered their time. And remember teams, there’s always next year!

The Oinkers, or police officers, took on the Hosers, or firefighters,
in the Kauffman Kup charity basketball game.

New traffic court locates in the Beach
Working with Village officials, the Lake County Board has agreed to purchase land for a new branch courthouse. The property is located on the west side of Nicole Lane, just north of Aldi.

"The new courthouse will be more convenient for our residents and our officers," said Mayor Rich Hill. "An added benefit will be new customers to the restaurants and shops along Rollins Road.

The Round Lake Beach branch courthouse will handle traffic cases, local-ordinance violations and other minor issues. More serious cases will be handled at the main courthouse in Waukegan.

The branch courthouse will likely resemble the one currently being built in Mundelein on Route 60/83 at Diamond Lake Road. Expected completion date for the Round Lake Beach courthouse is late 2004.

For your information

Water conservation Lawn sprinkling is restricted from May 15 through September 15. Sprinkling is allowed from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Permits to water new grass or sod are available from the Village Hall.

Permits required
Warm weather means home improvements, but before you start work, check with the Village Hall at (847) 546-2351 to determine if you need a permit. Permits are necessary for decks, fences, garages, patios, pools, sheds, siding, demolition, and many other home repairs.

Permits take five to seven business days to be issued, so plan ahead. Work on the project must commence within 90 days of issuance of the permit.

Bike safety
Summer means bike riding and the Round Lake Beach Police Department offers tips for bike riders. Secure bikes with a lock when they are left unattended. Copy down the make, model and serial number of the bike and keep it in your home. Use an engraver to put an identifying mark or number on the bike so that if it is stolen, the mark will help identify it when it is recovered.

Paint credit
The Systematic Inspection Program (SIP) begins in three areas of the Beach during May. It is designed to discover property maintenance problems in their early stages. For those residents enrolled in the SIP, a $100 credit toward exterior paint is available to the first 20 residents who apply. Residents must apply at the Village Hall and painting must be done by youths in the community service program. The grant is from United Way of Lake County's Community Investment program. For more information, please contact Jeneen Smith-Underwood at (847) 546- 2351 ext. 353.

Mosquito spraying
As part of a continuing effort to prevent the mosquito-borne disease West Nile Virus, the Village of Round Lake Beach is contracting with Clarke Environmental Mosquito Management this year. For anyone with questions or concerns, their toll free hotline number
is 1-800- 942-2555.

Residents can also take some simple steps to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites.
• Avoid being outdoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
• If outdoors at these times wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Loose-fitting, light-colored clothing is best.
• Use mosquito repellent containing 25 - 35% DEET when you are outdoors. Apply it sparingly to exposed skin or clothing, as indicated on the repellent label. Consult a physician before using repellents on young children.
• Repair any holes or tears in residential screens, including porches and patios.
• Eliminate stagnant water in birdbaths, ponds, flower pots, wading pools, tires and other receptacles in which mosquitoes might breed. Even water in a flower pot saucer can harbor mosquitos.

Rollins Rd. work
The Lake County Department of Transportation will be widening and adding turn lanes along Rollins Rd. from Drury Lane (just east of the Beach) to Route 45. The work is expected to begin this summer. The traffic light at Hook Dr. and Rollins Rd. is activitated. In 2004 the work will continue on Rollins Rd. west from Drury Lane to Route 83.
