Village of Round Lake Beach - Beach Bulletin

Beach Bulletin Vol 8 No. 2

March 2004

Summer beautification project open to youths
Village of Round Lake Beach The Village of Round Lake Beach is offering area youths an opportunity to participate in a summer beautification project. Using the Lake County Workforce Development Initiative to provide paid summer jobs to youths ages 15 and 16, the goal is to beautify selected areas within the Village.

In the morning, participants will attend classes, and in the afternoon they will work under the supervision of the Village. All supplies needed for the project including gardening tools, recycling bags, gloves and plants will be provided at no cost to workers.

As part of this program, Wal Mart also donated $1,000 to be used to purchase plants for this project.

The Village will select areas in need of a general beautification project and properties that have received orders to remove debris. In addition flowers will be planted at various public locations throughout the Village. These include the new police department, the new lakefront, the Village entrance signs and the Village parks.

Systematic Inspection Meeting
A Systematic Inspection meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, April 22, from 3:00-6:00 pm in the Village Hall. Inspection boundaries are southbound Rollins Road to the north, Oakwood to the south, west to Lotus and east to Cedar Lake Road.

March heralds tornado season
March is Tornado Awareness Month and is the beginning of the severe weather season in Illinois. Tornado sirens have been strategically placed throughout the Village to alert residents of approaching severe weather.

Sirens are tested on the first Tuesday of each month at 10:00 am. Two sirens in the northern portion of the Village have the ability to broadcast voice instructions. Sirens have solar panel backups enabling them to function without electricity

Two warning sirens sounds are used to alert residents.

Long steady siren lasting three to five minutes means the National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning and the Round Lake area is in the path of the storm. Residents should prepare to take cover and turn on a Weather Service radio.

Please do not call 911 when the siren sounds during stormy weather.

Oscillating (up and down) siren lasting three to five minutes indicates a tornado has been spotted. Take cover immediately. The best place to take cover is in a basement or a small interior room. If caught outside, try to find a low ditch or ravine.

There is no "all-clear" siren. Residents should use the radio to determine if the warning is over.

Rich Hill News from the Mayor
Many new businesses find a home in the Beach
2004 looks to be a great year for new business in Round Lake Beach. We have Home Depot, Buffalo Wild Wings, Sherwin Williams Paints, Car-X Automotive, Jiffy Lube and Tires Plus all coming to our Village. Commercial development benefits us all by increasing the assessed value of the village, in turn keeping property taxes lower for the residents. Businesses don't require the services that residents do so they subsidize the residents. It also makes it more convenient for you to shop close to home.

In other news, the County is getting close to beginning construction of their new traffic courthouse on Nicole Lane off of Rollins Road behind Aldi's. This will reduce the down time of our officers as they attend court proceedings. The Park District also is finalizing plans for construction of their 40,000 square foot indoor athletic center behind the Post Office off Hook Drive. What a great addition for the entire Round Lake Area.

Our Round Lake Commission, a joint committee with Round Lake and Round Lake Park, is actively pursuing improvement of our lake. If you would like to be involved, please . Information on the study of Round Lake conducted by Lake County's Lakes Management Unit will be presented at the Round Lake Beach Village Hall on Thursday, March 25, at 7:00 pm.

From the Police Department
Gang unit formed to prevent crime
A special two-officer team has been recreated to understand, seek out and minimize the effect of criminal gang behavior. The officers have the experience, the skills, and the desire to both educate and enforce laws with their emphasis being on gangs.

In the coming months, these officers, assisted by other members of the Department as well as officers from around the county, will be committed to a "zero tolerance" attitude towards criminal gang activity.

Fighting criminal gang behavior involves the entire community. It will involve you also. It may mean talking to your children, asking questions, listening to their stories. It may mean questioning your teenager's choice of friends, their habits, and their beliefs about the gangs.

If you see what you believe to be criminal gang behavior - don't tolerate it - report it, even if it is anonymously by calling (847) 546-2127 or on our Website Without your support, without your interest in keeping our community safe and attractive, we are crippled. Simply put, we need your help.

Two police officers alone cannot reduce gang activity. Together, however, we all can make an investment and help each other by reporting activity, cleaning graffiti, and talking to our kids about the risks of gang behavior and membership.

Lake County transportation referendum on March 16
The Round Lake Beach Village Board has adopted a resolution supporting the Lake County transportation referendum to pay for more road widening, intersection improvements and traffic signal synchronization. The referendum will be held during the primary election on Tuesday, March 16.

The referendum would increase the County sales tax by 1/4%. For every $100 you spend in the County, you would pay 25 cents more in sales tax. The increase does not apply to groceries, prescription drugs and retail sales of cars or boats.

The additional $15 million raised annually would be used exclusively for transportation improvements focusing on providing relief for the County's most congested roads.
