Washington Street Reconstruction Lane Closures to Begin Tomorrow
Contact: Al Giertych, Assistant County Engineer (847) 377-7400

Gurnee, IL – Beginning Tuesday, August 19, the Lake County Division of Transportation will close one lane of traffic in each direction on Washington Street between Illinois Route 21 (Milwaukee Avenue) in the Village of Gurnee and U.S. Route 41 in the City of Waukegan. These lane closures allow the contractor, Lake County Grading Company, of Libertyville, to begin reconstruction of this four-lane concrete highway. The project will continue until Fall 2009. Lane closures and the associated traffic impacts have been delayed until the Illinois Tollway completed work on the Route 120 bridge replacement at I-94. Motorists are advised to use Illinois Route 120 as an alternate route during this construction period.

The existing Washington Street pavement has been in place since the early 1970s and has reached the end of its useful life. Its poor condition has made it difficult to effectively maintain.

The roadwork will modernize the intersection at O’Plaine Road, improve drainage, provide landscaped medians, and elevate the roadway above the 100 year floodplain. The project will also accomplish needed repairs to the two highway bridges spanning the Des Plaines River.

Information concerning this project can be found on the Lake County Division of Transportation website, at lakegov.info, or at the Lake County PASSAGE web site lakecountypassage.com.

Lake County PASSAGE is an intelligent transportation system that provides an innovative combination of technology and communications to improve traffic flow and manage traffic incidents on Lake County’s arterial roadway network. Real-time traffic information, including locations of traffic crashes, road construction and traffic congestion is regularly updated and available to the public on the website and on the radio at 1620 AM.

County Encourages Citizens to Get Informed and Provide Input on Transportation
Transportation is a top strategic priority of the Lake County Board and the County recognizes that part of the solution has to be addressed in Springfield. The County is asking state leaders to approve a capital program that adequately funds all forms of state transportation. Citizens can let their voice be heard on this critical issue by sending an email message to their state legislators, Governor Blagojevich, and state legislative leaders encouraging them to dedicate funding for roads, bridges, and transit across Illinois. Visitors to the County Building in Waukegan can email their state leaders at a computer terminal set up in the lobby which links to FixOurRoadsNow.com A computer is also accessible in the lobby of the Lake County Division of Transportation in Libertyville.

Lake County Board Chair Suzi Schmidt said, “We want citizens to be aware of this issue and know where to direct their concerns. They can access this website at one of our County facilities or on their own.”

The FixOurRoadsNow.com website is sponsored by the Illinois Road and Transportation Builders Association, whose mission is to protect, improve and promote the transportation design and construction industry in Illinois. After the user enters their contact information, the website determines who their representatives are, and allows them to personalize an email message.
